MEACHAM, Wallace Edgar

No.T/5836715, Driver, Wallace Edgar MEACHAM
Aged 41

Royal Army Service Corps
Suicide on Wednesday 20th May 1942

Born in Q4-1901 [Newmarket 3b:492]. Son of William Edgar and Caroline Amelia MEACHAM (née BARBER). At that time his father was a saddler living at 5 Rutland Terrace. Lower Station Road (All Saints Road now) Newmarket. At the 1911 census the family were living at Moulton Road, Gazeley.
Whilst living at 86 St. Philips Road, Newmarket with his sister and brother in law, Wallace was found dead on the railway line near Snailwell, killed by a train. An inquest recording a suicide verdict obviously does not preclude Wallace from being National Debt of Honour, but it may have been why his name was not included on the War Memorial. War does terrible things to a great many people.

In the 1939 register his widower father [11-12-1869] retired saddler, and his brother Walter T [12-9-1907], electrician's labourer, were living at 86 St Philip's Road, Newmarket with the BANHAM family. There is one closed record. The family had moved to Burwell at one time, his mother dying there in 1931.

Wallace Meacham is buried in Burwell (St. Mary's) Churchyard Ref: A.519
